Diagnostic features

  • History of an exceptionally traumatic event (brief, prolonged or repeated) that would probably distress almost anyone.
  • Intrusive memories, flashbacks and nightmares.
  • The patient avoids thoughts, activities and situations reminding him/her of the trauma; sense of ‘numbness’; emotional blunting and detachment from other people; unresponsive to surroundings; no longer enjoys anything (anhedonia).
  • Autonomic arousal, hypervigilance, increased startle, insomnia, irritability, excessive anger, impaired concentration and/or memory.
